Ahead of its flagship North American event next month in Portland, Oregon, the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) has announced the winners of its annual sustainability awards.
Awards are given in three categories: business model, program and individual.
Guatemala-focused green coffee trading company Primavera Green Coffee is the recipient of this year’s award in the business model category. The RENACER Coffee Training School by Catholic Relief Services (CRS) is the winner in the program category.
Meanwhile, this year has two winners in the individual category following a score tie in the judging process: Sustainable Harvest Founder David Griswold; and Origin Coffee Lab (OCL) Founder and CEO José Rivera.
The winners will be formally recognized for the award at the Re:co Symposium, taking place April 19-20, ahead of the SCA 2023 Expo in Portland.
“The projects, business models and individuals receiving these awards are dedicated to rewiring mindsets and shaping behaviors to create a thriving coffee sector,” SCA Sustainability Director Andrés Montenegro said in an announcement from the group. “This year’s Sustainability Award winners remind us that the coffee sector’s sustainability journey is collaborative, and also that sustainability is not a goal, but a way of thinking and behaving for the common good, to make coffee better, for all.”
