Mahlkönig Updates Guatemala Grinder with New Look, Larger Hopper

Grinder manufacturer Mahlkönig has unveiled a redesigned and upgraded version of its popular Guatemala shop grinder.

Centered around the same tried-and-true, vertically oriented 71-millimeter steel burrs, the new version features a larger hopper and new body design, sturdier materials, and easier access to interior components for maintenance.

“The old Guatemala body was plastic; the new Guatemala body is aluminum,” Timo Keimer, head of product management for Mahlkönig parent company Hemro Group, told Daily Coffee News. “Serviceability is better because the grinder can now be opened from the back. All components are reachable without taking out the motor, and the motor can be installed — lowered into the body — with the spout already attached.”

The Guatemala’s new 900-gram (1.98-pound) hopper holds roughly 45% more coffee than the previous 1.1-pound hopper. The control panel on the front of the machine features updated pictograms allowing users to more rapidly identify their desired grind settings, and the new more resilient all-aluminum body is contoured for a more sculpted appearance.

Departing from the hard-lined monolithic appearance of old, the new Guatemala aims to blend in a bit more with modern cafe equipment and interior design trends, according to the company.

Other new machines the brand is pushing this year include the E80 Supreme espresso grinder featuring 80-millimeter flat steel burrs and the company’s relatively new Disc Detection System, and the grind-by-weight-capable E65 GBW. Both of those machines which were rolled out last year.

Keimer told DCN that Mahlkönig aims to begin shipping the redesigned Guatemala by late Spring of this year.
