Anyone that’s gone down the coffee rabbit hole has at some point chewed on the coffee/wine comparison. The barista/bartender comparison is another tried and true one, and in the past couple years, the divide between bartenders and baristas has grown slimmer than ever.
Nitro taps? Check. Blended drinks? Sure. Shaker drinks? Increasingly common.
Prior to this spring and summer, the only line not yet blurred was in the finer points of cocktail mixology, but now even that is as blurred as a barfly’s vision at last call. In spring there came much buzz about espresso and tonic. This summer, there are no holds barred. Baristas are breaking out the bitters, garnishes, fruits and fizzes as creative coffee concoctions abound in competitive cafes from coast to coast. Some are modeled after their spirituous counterparts (see the Espresso Old Fashioned) and others are completely original.
Here, in no particular order of ingenuity or quenchability, are 15 of the best coffee cocktails around the country right now:
1) Coffee Soda — PublicUS, Las Vegas

I’ve been enjoying a coffee phosphate drink at Onyx Coffee Lab in Springdale, AR.
Espresso, acid phosphate, Orange extract, soda and cream. Balanced, refreshing and delicious!
I was just making my way down to comment on the Phosphate! So good!
And yet all of these are ways to make faddish, second-rate, adulterated coffee out of boredom rather than any love of coffee itself.
Furthermore, the coffee/wine comparison rabbit hole fails completely here. Who in their right mind would mix a DRC Échézeaux with fruit juice to make sangria or add some club soda to make a spritzer? That’s so wrong it’s offensive.

Wow! I can’t believe this topic drew an offensive comment. We’re not talking politics here, just cocktails!

If anyone out there is in the Chicago neighborhood, TOMS Roasting Co. is doing a Coffee Soda made with Carpe Diem espresso, lemon rind, soda water, simple syrup and topped with a splash of half and half.
We have a rotating selection of monthly “specials” created by our barista’s and -although I’m a bit bias! -the Coffee Soda is pretty dang tasty. Plus, each cup of coffee helps to provide a days worth of safe water to a person in need. Come check us out! We have some passionate people behind the bar who love to chat coffee 🙂
