Italian espresso equipment company Nuova Simonelli has introduced new versions of its MDJ and MDXS commercial espresso grinders.

New features to the machines include larger touchscreen displays, improved user interfaces, motor suspension systems for noise dampening and more.

The MDJ, originally introduced in 2015, continues to grind on demand using 75-millimeter flat steel burrs with a stepless adjustment mechanism. The 750-watt motor runs on 115-volt power.

Its combination of burr size, motor power, speed and a 3.5-pound hopper is designed to accommodate grinding up to 3 kilograms (6.6 pounds) of coffee per day in busy environments.

With a similar set of features intended for slightly-lighter-duty applications, the MDXS centers on 65-millimeter burrs spun by a 400-watt motor on 115-volt power. Nuova Simonelli suggests the MDXS, which originally launched in 2017, grinds up to approximately 1.5 kilograms (3.3 pounds) of coffee daily.

Both of the machines now ship with redesigned portafilter hooks, as well as the upgraded 2.8-inch touchscreens and noise-dampening systems.

“The motor is connected to the metal body by silent blocks to ensure the silence of grinding systems,” Nuova Simonelli R&D Director Claudio Cingolani told Daily Coffee News, adding that the two machines are equivalently quiet and consistent in grind quality.

Both new versions are also outfitted with new clump crushers for a continuous lower retention and evenly distributed grounds in the portafilter.

Cingolani said the older versions of the machines have ceased production and that all new MDJ and MDXS grinders include the upgraded features. The company, part of the Simonelli Group, has not disclosed MSRPs for either of the models.
