The Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) has announced that two of its seven sanctioned World Coffee Championships — Brewers Cup and Cup Tasters — are coming to Chicago in 2024.
The events, which will feature multiple days and rounds of coffee competition and judging among the dozens of competitors who have achieved national champion status, will take place in conjunction with the 2024 Specialty Coffee Expo, the SCA’s flagship North American coffee industry event.
The SCA made the 2024 announcement just ahead of the upcoming 2023 Expo, which is taking place this month in Portland, Oregon, and will feature six United States championship events. Winners of those events will fly either to Athens, Greece, or Taipei, Taiwan, to compete in the 2023 world championships later this year.
Each of the SCA’s sanctioned events is designed to promote specific professional coffee skills while promoting innovation, professional development, and the successes of individual competitors and the organizations they represent.
The Cup Tasters championship celebrates achievement in coffee “cupping,” the industry term for professional coffee tasting for the purposes of quality evaluation and quality control. The Brewers Cup, meanwhile, celebrates innovations and skill in manual coffee brewing.
